Yesterday in an Atlanta court, T.I. pleaded guilty to federal firearms charges. But he's not going straight to prison -- yet. The rapper asked that his sentencing be deferred for a year, so he can perform at least 1,000 hours of community service
. That service will feature T.I. using his fame to educate young people about the mistakes he's made.

After performing the community service, T.I. will still face a year in prison, three years of supervised release -- including a year of home detention -- and a 100-thousand-dollar fine and 500 additional hours of community service. But if he doesn't complete the initial community service, he'll face a much longer prison sentence.

T.I. was arrested in a parking lot last October, right before he was to have performed at the BET Awards. Among the charges the rapper pleaded guilty to yesterday: possession of unregistered machine guns and silencers, unlawful possession of machine guns, and possession of firearms by a convicted felon. He also admitted that he illegally possessed eight firearms found in his car and home.
