The British media reported that Bale's mother JENNY and sister SHARON told police the actor assaulted them at London's Dorchester Hotel Sunday night. Bale's sister told the Daily Telegraph, quote, "It is an extremely sensitive situation. There is nothing more I can say." Daily Telegraph sources claim the alleged assault is related to a long-running family dispute.

Despite the allegation, Bale was permitted to attend The Dark Knight's London premiere Monday evening, but was then reportedly arrested and questioned by police for four hours before being released without being charged.

Bale's lawyer read a statement to the news media Tuesday, saying, quote, "Christian Bale attended a London police station today on a voluntary basis. Bale, who denies the allegation, cooperated throughout, gave his account in full of the events in question, and has left the station without any charge being made against him by the police."

A London police spokesman would not say specifically that Bale was arrested, but did say, quote, "A 34-year-old man attended a central London police station...by appointment and was arrested in connection with an allegation of assault." It's the policy of the British police not to name suspects who have not been formally charged.

The Sun newspaper reported that police didn't question the actor about the alleged assault incident Monday because they didn't want to interfere with the London premiere of The Dark Knight.
