He was one of the few stars who didn't perform on last night's American Music Awards, but CHRIS BROWN ended up the big winner.

He picked up Artist of the Year as well as Favorite Pop/Rock Male Artist and Soul/R&B Male Artist.

Picking up the Artist of the Year award, Chris admitted that he thought COLDPLAY deserved it, but thanked his fans, of whom he said, quote, "I love with all my heart." The woman that Chris allegedly loves with all his heart, RIHANNA, took home two awards, including Favorite Pop/Rock Female. She also performed her new single, "Rehab," while sporting an eye patch, about 50 pounds of shiny metal chains and metal-studded leather gloves.

ALICIA KEYS, who wore a large jewel dangling in the middle of her forehead, was also a double winner last night, and she had the honor of closing the show. She brought the house down with a rendition of her song "Superwoman," featuring a BARACK OBAMA-inspired rap from QUEEN LATIFAH and some amazing vocalizing from opera superstar KATHLEEN BATTLE.

,b>KANYE WEST was another double winner last night, and in typical fashion he used his time at the podium for some attention-grabbing announcements. After picking up his first award for Favorite Rap/Hip-Hop Album, Kanye spoke about how it's the responsibility of musicians to, quote, "keep pushing each other" to reach new heights. Noting that most critics believe that nobody will ever make better music than THE BEATLES or HENDRIX, he insisted, "WE will be the new Beatles, the new Hendrix." He also stated, "I wanna be ELVIS!" Later in the show, Kanye was named Favorite Rap/Hip-Hop Male Artist, and he announced that he was planning to give the award to LIL WAYNE, because he felt it truly was Weezy's year.

JIMMY KIMMEL, returning as host for the fifth year, kept things moving but wasn't very amusing, although he did get off a few good lines. At one point, Kimmel joked that the JONAS BROTHERS, quote, "are mowing through women like MADONNA goes through the Yankees starting lineup."

Overall, the show was packed with music, but it was all about the ladies -- of 19 performances, 13 were by women. Standouts included SARAH MCLACHLAN and PINK's duet on Sarah's classic hit "Angel," and ANNIE LENNOX's gut-wrenching solo piano performance of her hit "Why," which earned the night's only standing ovation. Annie was given a special Award of Merit, presented to her by surprise guest JUSTIN TIMBERLAKE.

Other women who tore up the stage included TAYLOR SWIFT, who sang "White Horse;" CHRISTINA AGUILERA, who opened the show with a lengthy medley of her hits; BEYONCÉ, who did her patented booty-shaking "Single Ladies" dance; a distracted-looking MARIAH CAREY, who sang "I Stay In Love;" NATASHA BEDINGFIELD, who also did a medley; LEONA LEWIS, who sounded better than Mariah on "Better In Time," and MILEY CYRUS, who celebrated her 16th birthday by giving one of the most rock-influenced, elaborate performances of the night with "Fly On The Wall." The song featured a car, a pack of fake paparazzi chasing Miley all over the stage, and a massive troupe of dancers backing her up. In addition, THE PUSSYCAT DOLLS performed "I Hate This Part" and "When I Grow Up."

As for the guys, the Jonas Brothers, who won the Breakthrough Award, rocked it out with their song "Tonight," KANYE WEST sang "Heartless" from his new album 808s & Heartbreak, which is coming out today, and COLDPLAY performed "Lovers In Japan," with lead singer CHRIS MARTIN turning in an unimpressive, off-key vocal while a steady stream of multicolored fake leaves poured down from the ceiling. THE FRAY did an unexciting version of their new single "You Found Me," while NE-YO gave a terrific performance of his songs "Closer" and "Miss Independent" while showing off some slick dance moves. And the reunited NEW KIDS ON THE BLOCK took everyone back to the 90s with a medley of hits including "The Right Stuff" and "I'll Be Loving You (Forever)."

Other winners included Taylor Swift, DAUGHTRY, RASCAL FLATTS and BRAD PAISLEY.

This year, for the first time, the American Music Awards had a one-hour red-carpet pre-show with commentary from Dancing With The Stars judge CARRIE ANN INABA, The Bachelor host CHRIS HARRISON and Pussycat Doll NICOLE SCHERZINGER, who really should stick to her day job. DAVID COOK also performed his songs "Light On" and "Declaration" during the hour.
