Michael's Body Headed to Neverland
MICHAEL JACKSON's body will be transported from the Los Angeles area to Neverland Ranch on Thursday morning, with a public viewing to follow the next day.
PHOTOS: Neverland In All Its GloryABC News has confirmed the reports via a law enforcement source. In addition, a private memorial service reportedly will be held at the ranch this Sunday. Neverland Ranch is located outside Santa Barbara, about 150 miles northwest of L.A.
The California Highway Patrol says it had not received a request for a motorcade as of yesterday morning, but would need to be notified if one is necessary, since the transportation of Michael's body would draw massive attention and would heavily affect traffic. A spokesman for the Santa Barbara Sheriff's Department told E! Online, quote, "Our guys are meeting as we speak with the California Highway Patrol to discuss the security issues." The CHP later said it met with Michael's family yesterday afternoon. Santa Barbara County officials said they couldn't confirm that a funeral for Michael will be held at the ranch.
Jackson had faced foreclosure last year on Neverland until he entered a joint venture with an affiliate of the firm Colony Capital LLC to take control of the property. The chairman of Colony Capital released a statement to the Santa Barbara community yesterday, noting the stream of fans who've visited the ranch to pay their respects. He advised the community to, quote, "adopt an attitude of hospitality, warmth, and tolerance and allow the world to pay their respects to this global icon by conducting ourselves with grace and elegance." A moving van arrived at the ranch yesterday morning to deliver undisclosed items, while a cement mixer was also spotted there.
Producer QUINCY JONES says he doesn't plan to attend the funeral for the King of Pop, telling Entertainment Tonight he wouldn't be able to "handle it." KTRK-TV is reporting Michael's doctor, cardiologist DR. CONRAD MURRAY, also will not attend. Murray, who performed CPR on Michael after he collapsed, has been described as a witness in the investigation.
Michael's father, JOE JACKSON, has denied reports that his son will be buried at Neverland. California law prohibits un-cremated remains from being interred outside a cemetery. The mayor of Gary, Indiana -- Michael's hometown -- is lobbying for the family to bury the singer in Gary.
