Dirty South popped up in the latter half of the '90s, after gangsta rap became the standard currency of hip-hop. Dirty South drew from The Chronic and 2 Live Crew's filthy traditions in equal measure, arriving at a stoned, violent, sex-obsessed and (naturally) profane brand of modern hip-hop. The style drew its name from Goodie Mob's 1995 song of the same name and they, along with Outkast, were the best the genre had to offer, since both their lyrics and music were sharper than such contemporaries as the No Limit posse.
